By Law360, New York (December 16, 2015, 7:15 PM EST) -- Home improvement chain Menards has been hit with a National Labor Relations Board charge for allegedly having an overly broad handbook that interferes with or restrains employees’ rights under the National Labor Relations Act. The Office & Professional Employees International Union Local 153 said in an amended charge filed Monday with the NLRB that Menards' Team Member Information Booklet has provisions that are too broad and can restrain or coerce the exercise of employee rights.
Menards treats its employees like kindergartners with its break and attendance policies, giving you an allotted number of points to be more than 5 minutes late from a meal or rest break after which you are terminated. Full-time positions are only offered to 1 in 10 people, which means most people who work here will only ever be part-time. Menard ISD Employee Handbook. Revised June 2012. 2012-2013 Employee. Menards is a fun and easy place to work. It can be stressful and exhausting because you are in retail and it is a huge store so you are running all over the place all day, but as far as retail goes, it is by far one of the better companies to work for. If you work hard enough, and are not a total idiot, you should be able to advance fairly quickly and the pay isn't bad. It still not a living wage, but what retail job is? You get an employee discount and standard benefits.
Menards Employee Benefits
One thing that's great about Menards is that you don't have to push stupid stuff like credit cards and service plans and they don't do any data mining at checkout so you don't have to harass your customers as they are trying to pay and leave. Menards also has really good systems so it's easy to find the products for your customers, or order online for them. There are computers everywhere so you can quickly help a customer who has questions, and inventory is about as good as it gets in retail. Also, the time clock system is great!
You clock in by swiping your name badge which is quick and easy. Everything is real time so if you don't remember what time you clocked out for lunch you can just check on your phone. You can also request time off and pick up shifts online. Training is also good. You can do at home training which I really liked. You don't get paid for it per se, but you can get free shirts which is awesome.
I had a ton of free, really nice, polo's to wear to work just by doing some pretty helpful training. Only your department training is required, everything else if optional. Last, but not least, the BEST thing about working at Menards is they send you gifts in the mail for holidays and stuff. It's the COOLEST thing I've ever had an employer do.
Sometimes they are weird or goofy things but it's so fun to get a gift in the mail every month or so. And it makes you feel truly appreciated. Oh, having said that, they also give very frequent raises which makes you feel good even if it doesn't amount to a whole lot. It's still just really nice to be appreciated by your employer. Overall, Menards is one of the best companies I have ever worked for, and I've had a million jobs. Stick with them and you can do very well for yourself.
I forgot to mention that you get to wear jeans to work. How great is that? A typical day was always filled with something or task to do. I learned and improved my ability to be accountable, self-driven, and work smoothly with even the most disagreeable coworkers. Management was strict and had high expectations but was always empathetic of any prohibiting issues in you life. The culture is diverse with people who range from different aspirations and backgrounds.
The hardest part of the job was the days when there was nothing to do. Those were the days that seemed to never end. The best part of the job was definitely the friendships I created along with.
